PRESS RELEASE:
Claflin Hill Symphony Chamber Players to perform Messiaen’s “Quartet for the End of Time” at Melrose Unitarian Universalist Church on Sunday, April 2 at 3 PM.
On Sunday, April 2 at 3 PM the Claflin Hill Symphony Chamber Players will perform the “Quartet for the End of Time” by French composer Olivier Messiaen. The performers will be Li- Mei Liang, violin; Paul Surapine, clarinet; Darry Dolezal, cello; and Tom Hojnacki, piano.
Long considered a masterpiece of 20th century chamber music, the piece was written while Messiaen was interred in a German prisoner of war camp in 1940 and was subsequently premiered by composer and fellow inmates at the camp. Messiaen cites the Revelation of St. John as the inspiration for the piece and the music is by turns mystical, terrifying, achingly beautiful and ultimately transcendent.
The Melrose UU Church is located at 70 West Emerson Street in Melrose, MA. The concert is open to the public with a suggested donation of $20.00. (proceeds support the Claflin Hill Symphony Chamber Players and the Melrose UU Church)
