Frequently Asked Questions about the Annual Pledge Drive

As members and friends of Melrose Unitarian Universalist Church (MUUC), it is our shared responsibility to nurture our congregation with our time, talents and treasures ($). The Annual Pledge Drive, which is usually held in March, focuses on the collective financial contribution we offer to support the coming year’s budget.

What is the Annual Pledge Drive?

The Annual Pledge Drive raises funds to support the continued operation of MUUC during the upcoming church year. Members and friends of MUUC pledge the financial commitment they will make to support paying minister and staff salaries and benefits, the many wonderful programs of the church, and for upkeep of the physical building. The amounts pledged this spring are due during our next fiscal year which runs from the coming July through the following June (i.e., July 2019 – June 2020).

How Much Should I pledge?

Many factors come into play when determining a pledge amount that feels right and generous for you.
The UUA fair_share_contribution_guide 2019 is a good tool to consult that takes into consideration your annual adjusted income and the role MUUC plays in your life. In addition, you may find this colorful guide developed by the Unitarian Society of Northampton and Florence helps you translate sizes into real dollars.

Why are members and friends asked to pledge?

Everyone who attends the church and participates in its activities – Sunday services, religious education programs, social justice ministries, fellowship activities – are asked to consider sharing in its overall financial upkeep. Supporting the church is our shared responsibility.

When is my pledge due?

This year, we are asking all who can attend our
Celebration Sunday service on March 24th, to bring their pledge commitment with them. During the service, we will celebrate together our shared commitment to support the programs and activities planned for next year. Anyone who cannot attend the March 24th service is asked to return their pledge commitment by March 31, 2019. This will allow the Finance Committee and Board time to prepare the final budget for next year which will be presented at the May annual meeting for the congregation’s approval.

What if I am not able to fulfill my pledge?

Our lives are not static and sometimes things happen during the year that may prevent you from fulfilling your pledge. If you need to adjust your pledge sometime during the year, contact the Collector or the Minister.

When and how do I pay my pledge?

Beginning July 1, 2019 you may make payments to fulfill your annual pledge in any timeframe (monthly, quarterly, etc.) that is convenient for you. Many people use an automatic bill pay system through their bank. Others prefer to place a check marked as a pledge in the collection plate or simply mail their pledge to the church office.

How do I make my pledge?

Pledge forms were mailed to your home. If you did not receive one and would like to make a pledge, please contact the church office. The form may be completed and returned when you come to church on Celebration Sunday, March 24th, or mailed to: MUUC – Collector, 70 West Emerson St., Melrose, MA 02176. You may also e-mail the Collector directly at [email protected] to state your pledge commitment.
