Carpool from Melrose UU Church
70 West Emerson Street, Melrose MA
Come join Melrose UU Church Green Sanctuary Committee as we travel to the Wachusett Mountain Woods in north-central Massachusetts to scan the sky for migrating raptors. Based on previous years sightings, this is a good time of year to see many migrating broad-winged hawks. We could also see Cooper’s, sharp-shinned, red-shouldered, and red-tailed hawks, American kestrels, merlins, Peregrine falcons, Northern Harriers, osprey, bald eagle – and maybe even a golden eagle!
Drive or hike to the summit for best viewing. If you wish to drive up to the summit from the visitor center, there is a $2.00 fee per car. The hike is approximately a 0.7 mile, 40 minute hike and a gain of 600’ elevation. There is limited parking both at the summit and at the visitor center. Generally, trail heads that also go to the summit also offer parking. If hiking, download a trail map.
Bring your binoculars or spotting scope, water, and lunch. Sun screen, insect repellant, hat, and sunglasses recommended. If you are driving up, you may also want to bring a chair, but people generally stand while actively hawk watching. Bathrooms are available at the visitors center, but not at the summit.
Join the carpool group as a driver, rider, or waitlist (first name and last initial only, please).
Rain will cancel this event – see www.melroseuu.org/raptor-walk for updates or cancellations.
