Reflections: April 2018

Why it was wonderful;

Why, all at once there were leaves,

Leaves at the end of a dry stick, small, alive

Leaves out of wood. It was wonderful.

You can’t imagine. They came by the wood path

And the earth loosened, the earth relaxed, there were flowers

Out of the earth! Think of it! And oak trees

Oozing new green at the tips off them and flowers

Squeezed out of clay, soft flowers, limp

Stalks flowering. Well, it was like a dream.

It happened so quickly, all of a sudden

It happened.

(by Archibald MacLeish)

It may be hard to believe, this description of what is coming. Spring has been so reticent to appear. But appear it will, without our needing to believe it, or coax it, it will come, much as Archibald MacLeish describes – all of a sudden, the turning, new life emerging and we, astonished once again, may feel the stirrings of our souls, an awakening of wonder and the seedlings of new hope.

There are reasons for such wonder and hope: in the beauty of the natural world unfurling for sure, and in the emerging strength and wisdom of our country’s young people. Closer to home, our church family is growing. Join us Sunday, April 15 when we will welcome in our new members, Liz B., Joan C., Laura M., Stacey B-W, and Henry W.

And sometime this month, if all goes as we hope, you will learn of the person your Ministerial Search Committee is presenting as a candidate for the ministry of this church. Please do look ahead to your May calendar, and mark down May 12-20 when you will have many opportunities to meet and experience your prospective minister. The congregational vote to call her/him is scheduled for Sunday, May 20.

It seems a delightful happenstance that this year Easter comes at the very beginning of the month setting us up emotionally and spiritually to engage in welcome and hospitality in its deepest sense of open heartedness and care.

Why it was wonderful;

Why, all at once there were leaves,…

Stalks flowering. Well, it was like a dream.

It happened so quickly, all of a sudden

It happened.

Happy Easter, happy Passover, happy spring, my dear ones!

Blessings of wonder and joy,

Rev Anita
