Reflections: October 2017

How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world,” said the young, wise Anne Frank. So it is that we are not waiting one more moment. Diversity: On the Path to Understanding is launched!

Melrose Unitarian Universalist Church is on a path with huge opportunities and a vision as large and compelling as I have ever experienced in a congregation. And we are doing it together, young and old, long timer and new comer, social justice activists, musicians, dancers, actors, quilters, teachers, students, mystics, humanists, traditionalists and iconoclasts, organizers and those who like to help. We are on this path, not only to understand diversity but truly, to develop a deeper understanding of ourselves, as we explore the diverse ways there are of being human.

While I do believe that we are being lifted on the wings of the very Spirit of Life, it is only going to carry us through the transformation this spirit promises, to the extent that we grab hold and come aboard. Happily, there are so many ways to engage and participate, you can climb on for the engagement that will lift you.

With an inspired and enthusiastic Ability Topic Team we have activities and experiences to evoke insights and engage challenges for the month of October. In fact, their generation of ideas has been so rich they most likely will carry the topic through the first week in November. Look elsewhere in this Lightbearer for more information on what is happening.

For some topics, teams will want a month or more for programming, while some may only need a few weeks. But the topics all need teams to shape the exploration. It is our hope to have a look at the topic of Age and how it impacts us as people and as a faith community next. While many of you have indicated interest in exploring this topic, we are in need of a person to be the Lead for the Age Topic Team. We have lots of resources, and there will be good support for the team and whomever agrees to be the Lead. Maybe you.

Talk to me or someone on the Transition Teams Collaborative if you would like the fun and creative growth experience of being the Lead for a Topic

Team. It’s going to be a great year, and it’s going to take all of us. As in the words of 19th century Indian mystic Ramakrishna, “The winds of grace are always blowing, but you have to raise the sail.”

Come, let us raise those sails together.
