We Are Writing a New Covenant — Your Input Welcome!

While other faiths may require a profession of belief, UUs rely on covenants — promises about how we will treat one another as we journey together. These statements remind us of our values and guide us in repair.

For the last year or so, MUUC has been experimenting with the covenant we speak together in the worship service. We’ve tried other churchs’ covenants and our own Mission and Vision statements. Then last spring, we asked the congregation to submit their thoughts about a new covenant, and over the summer a small group of folks compiled those responses and worked up some drafts. Across October 2026, we are presenting four new drafts in worship, and you’ll get a chance to give us feedback and then to vote on your favorite ones.

Our Four Current Drafts

  • Draft One, presented in worship September 27

Love is the doctrine of this church,

And service is its prayer.

In this sacred space, we covenant

to build an accepting community,

to create together what we cannot create alone,

a world filled with justice and joy.

  • Draft Two, to be presented October 4

As a Beloved Community,

We promise to celebrate, care for, and challenge one another.

Together, we covenant to build hope and

to show love for each other and the greater world

through our words,  actions, and outreach.

  • Draft Three, to be presented October 11

We covenant to make this congregation a place where each person can belong, matter, and share meaning.

We will welcome one another warmly, respect one another’s gifts and needs, and take time to share our authentic selves.

We will nurture joy and connection. We will create together what we cannot create alone.

When we fall short, we will listen, speak honestly, and work to repair harm. Together, we will build a beloved community of belonging, compassion, and purpose.

  • Draft Four, to be presented October 18

Love is the doctrine of this church

And service is its prayer.

We covenant to care for one another,

To build community, and

To transform our lives and our world

In the shape of our shared values.

Comments and Voting

We welcome your comments. As each draft is presented in worship, we will post a copy on the wall of the Sanctuary. Sticky notes and pens are provided in a pew nearby. Please leave in-person feedback this way. You may also email our covenant-writing group at covenant@melroseuu.org.

We will discuss all suggestions and present edited drafts here. We hope to ask for a vote in worship on October 25. You may also vote by emailing us at covenant@melroseuu.org.

Thank you for participating!
